About Mkhitar Sebastasi

Mkhitar Sebastatsi was born on 7 February 1676 in Sebastia. He is an Armenian Catholic Church figure, Armenian scholar and founder Of the congregation of Mkhitarists. From an early age the kid dreamed of becoming a priest. At the age of 20, priest Mkhitar Sebastatsi was appointed Abbot of the monastery of Surb Nshan. Mkhitar Sebastatsi translated, created and published thousands of works, enriching Armenian literature. 1685-1691 studied at St. Sebastia In Nshan Monastery, where a deacon named Mkhitar was ordained. 1692 Mkhitar visited St. Etchmiadzin, then went to the island of Sevan, where a vision of the Mother of God appeared to him. Under the influence of the vision, the decision to found a congregation was strengthened.

At the age of 20, he was appointed a priest by the abbot of the Holy Sign Monastery.

At the age of 25, Mkhitar founded a church in Constantinople, following his example, he founded the Mkhitaryan Congregation with a group of young people.

After only 2 years, fleeing the persecution of the Ottoman authorities, the congregation moved to Penopoles, located in Venice. And in 1715, the congregation moved to St. Lazarus Island by order of the Republic of Venice.

Mkhitar built a monastery on the island, where he died at the age of 73.

The school was founded in 1984 as School No. 183 by Ashot Dabaghyan, Ashot Manucharyan, and Ashot Bleyan.The school was granted «experimental» status by the Soviet Armenian Ministry of Education in 1987 and expanded into a complex in 1989. It played a key role in the Karabakh movement during perestroika and one of its founders Ashot Manucharyan; was a member of the Karabakh Committee. Its current principal is Ashot Bleyan.
